A 61 year old woman is Trinidad and Tobago's first confirmed case of the Zika Virus. Health Minister, Terrence Deyalsingh, made the announcement while speaking at a Mosquito Eradication Exercise in Penal this afternoon.
Deyalsingh said that a blood sample from the woman was taken on February 12th and traces of the Zika virus were found in her blood this afternoon. She had recently returned from a trip to New Zealand.
Other Caribbean countries to identify cases of the virus include Jamaica, Barbados and Guyana.
The Zika virus has been linked to babies being born with underdeveloped brains and its spread has caused the Government in Brazil to recently deploy 220,000 soldiers in a campaign to eradicate the mosquitoes spreading the virus.
