A public outcry, spear headed by the feminist group, WOMANTRA, is calling for Port-Of- Spain(POS) Mayor, Raymond Tim Kee, to resign after his statements yesterday evening, following the discovery of the body of Japanese national, Asami Nagakiya . Tim Kee is reported to have attributed the death to the "vulgar" and "lewd" behaviour of women during the Carnival season.
The Mayor’s office has since issued an apology in the form of statement which said that, “His Worship the Mayor of Port of Spain Alderman Raymond Tim Kee unequivocally apologizes to women and the national population who were offended by remarks attributed to him following the death of carnival visitor and mas player, Asami Nagakiya.
He agrees that his comments could have been considered out of line, but despite the anger being expressed from many quarters including feminist groups and activists, he has also received calls of support from several women agreeing with him on the lack of modesty displayed by some women and girls on the streets during the Carnival Celebrations.”
Local feminist group, WOMANTRA, has started a petition calling for Tim Kee to resign, stating that the POS mayor has a habit of “blaming and shaming victims of abuse”. They believe that persons with that kind of mindset do not have a place in public office and are calling on all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago who agree with their view to sign their petition on www.change.org, in order to get Time Kee out of office.
The petition started at around 9am this morning and currently has 3,032 signatures.
Meanwhile, according to an autopsy report done by the forensic sciences centre this morning, Asami Nagakiya is said to have been strangled to death. Nagakiya was found dead, bent in awkward position over a tree root in the Queens Park Savannah yesterday morning after carnival celebrations
