Apart from just hosting the media briefings after Cabinet, Minister of Communications, the Honourable Maxie Cuffie, actually does have a few other responsibilities within his portfolio. One of these is oversight of the Government Printery now located at Frederick Settlement, Caroni.
The Minister paid a visit on January 19th 2016 to tour the facility and interact with staff. While there, accompanied by his Permanent Secretary, the Minister listened to the various concerns of the employees. The issues included staffing, the proposal for rationalization which seeks a new structure for the Printery, upgrades of antiquated machinery including computers, bonding equipment and offset (press equipment), and the geographic location of the Printery. The Minister gave the assurance that every effort will be made to address the concerns, where possible, and minimise any inconvenience to staff. He underscored however, that in these economic times, Government and by extension the Ministry, will continue to examine cost effective ways to conduct business in all areas, including the printery.
