Singer, songwriter David Bowie, 69, has died after an 18 month long battle with cancer.
The news was confirmed by his son, film director Duncan Jones, who issued a statement on his father's social media accounts this morning.
"David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief."
Bowie had a 40 year career in the music industry becoming one of the most influential artists of his generation. He excelled in all forms of the rock genre, soul, pop, dance and electronic music.
The Englishman was also famous for his flamboyant, androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust.
Bowie's death has come just two days after he realeased his 25th and final album, Blackstar.
Respects have been coming in from around the world to honour Bowie's memory.
