Destra Opts Out of Soca Monarch

Self proclaimed "Queen of Bacchanal" (QoB), Destra Garcia, will be missed by fans at this years International Soca Monarch Competition, as she has opted to bow out and focus on building her QoB brand.

The list of semi-finalists for the annual competition was revealed last night (Jan 5th). Destra's name was noticeably absent as the songstress did not enter because of the stress that comes with planning for an impressionable performance, recalling that some of her happiest years in terms of carnival was when she did not enter for about six years.

Destra explained that while she re-entered the competition after she had her daughter Xai due to popular demand by her fans, she has grown to realise that she is not a competition artiste, a platform where she gets nervous and feels as though her best isn't given. She also believes that room should be given for some of the young and upcoming talents.

In addition to Destra's absence, it can be expected that this year's Soca Monarch competition will be without Bunji Garlin and his wife Fay Ann Lyons who have missed the show in previous years due to disagreements and reigning Soca Monarch King Machel Montano, who had previously announced he wiould not not be defending his title this year.

With so many of the bigger stars missing this year the title remains open for anyone to claim. However, the record holder for the most Soca Monarch titles, seven (7) time winner SuperBlue is still among those who will take part in the competition.
