The investigation into the Children’s Life Fund is now complete. Speaking with the media at the weekly Police media briefing head of the Criminal Investigation Division Senior Superintendent Glenn Hacket, said the investigation spearheaded by the Fraud Squad is now over.
He said the formal documentation will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for advice, but he declined to give details. Recently, Finance Minister Colm Imbert said that an investigation into the fund would commence in order to ensure that the fund was being used as was intended. The fund was the brainchild of former Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. Imbert was criticised by the United National Congress for the investigation, saying that there was nothing to investigate.
Meantime the investigation into the controversial Life-Sport programme is nearing completion. Hackett also made the announcement at the briefing today. However, he said that the greatest challenge has been in attainting the relevant documents, but that police have been able to acquire ninety-eight percent of the files. Hackett said the services of a reputable accounting firm will be recruited to assist with the investigation, adding that officers are working assiduously to create a paper-trail to ensure increased convictions.
