A 17 year old Marabella Secondary School girl was shot in the chest yesterday afternoon at an abandoned house on San Fernando Street, allegedly used for sexual intercourse. The student was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital and is currently in a stable condition after undergoing emergency surgery.
Eye witnesses reported that at around 4 p.m., the school girl was seen entering the house with a boy wearing a Servol (Service Volunteered for All) uniform. Residents in the area refer to the abandoned house as ‘The Mansion’ and said that it is frequented daily by school children who use it to engage in sexual and drug related activity.
Shortly after entering the building a gunshot was heard and the girl was seen running out of the house screaming and covered in blood. She was eventually picked up by a passing vehicle and taken to the hospital. The boy is reported to have ran away from the scene.
San Fernando Mayor, Kazim Hosein, said that the matter was before the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court and that it was expected to come up for a hearing tomorrow. The Mayor added that there were currently eighty seven other abandoned properties before the court.
The Servol student is the main suspect in the case and the police investigating the incident said that an arrest will be made shortly. They went into the abandoned house and found mattresses with used condoms around the area.
The San Fernando City Corporation has since written to the owner of the abandoned property, demanding that the premises be cleaned out and closed down, however they have yet to receive a response.
