A Special Reserve Police Officer was shot and killed by a fellow police officer at the Guanapo Police Station in the early hours of this morning.
The officer was identified as 36 year old Govindra Ramroop of the La Brea Rapid Response Unit.
Reports say that at around 12:08 a.m. Ramroop and another officer returned to the station from a police exercise, when the other officer was in the process of cleaning his fire arm when it accidentaly went off and shot Ramroop in the chest. He was rushed to the Point Fortin District Hospital, but was pronounced dead at around 12:45 a.m.
Acting Commissioner of Police Harold Phillip, extended condolences to the Ramroop family for the incident. However, President of the Police Social and Welfare Association Anand Ramesar, said that the response to Ramroop’s shooting is unacceptabe and that the explanation given so far was unsatisfactory. He is demanding a full investigation into the matter.
Ramesar said he wants the Police Complaints Authority (PCA) and other relevant authorities to launch an investigation as quickly as possible and to provide the family of Ramroop with answers without delay.
