"Once a year in October..." so Lord Christo's 'Intercol Anthem' begins.
Its November this year though but the famed school boys' Intercol kicks off this afternoon as all teams get ready for the knock-out phase of schools footall and the excitement it brings. Today the underdogs get to play with the big teams as the Premier Division schools return to their various zones for the qualifying rounds.
Last year, an East Mucurapo team who had just been relegated from the Premier Division emerged as the suprise Intercol winners. This was just the latest in a long line of upsets that knock-out football brings as it all comes down to who executes, along with some luck, on the actual day.
Speyside High, Carapichaima and Trinity East will be looking at East Mucurapo's victory last year as inspiration to pick themselves up after disappointing seasons which resulted in them all being relegated.
The games today involve mainly the teams still at the zonal division before the Premier Divison teams enter in the next round of matches. Blanchisseuse High play Diego Martin Central and two strong teams from years gone by Tranqulity and Malick, face off to advance to the quarterfinal stage. Games in the South start tomorrow and the other zones on Wednesday.
