Keith Diaz has been re-elected to head Pan Trinbago.
The world governing body of steel pan, held its 5th triennial special convention and annual general meeting at the Radisson Hotel, Wrightson Road, Port of Spain on Sunday. Three other members of the last executive were re-elected as well, comprising Vice President, Byron Serette, Secretary, Richard Forteau, and Trustee, Allan Augustus.
A total of twenty nine persons contested nine positions with one position, Secretary, being unopposed. The re-elected President, who has held this post since 2009, won with one hundred and ninety eight votes with his closest opponent being Vernon Morance, who got sixty three. The lone female contender for the Presidency post, Beverly Ramsey- Moore from Tobago, got a mere forty three votes.
Elections were halted in 2012 by a lengthy court matter involving members of the New Visionary led by Ramsey-Moore and the executive of Pan Trinbago. In this lawsuit, the candidates challenged Steelpan’s governing body, who said previously that their (the candidates) nomination papers were invalid. In February this year, the appeal court judgment was given in favour of the claimants.
Although the new visionaries were successful in the court, they were unable to muster the support of the pan fraternity. The newly elected executive will serve three years in office before elections become constitutionally due.
